The dollar you don’t spend today is missed by others

December 16, 2008

Here is a very interesting article that brings another point to the discussion. I remember when the talk of the recession were taking hold and the economy slipping and fuel prices slammed down to earth. There was talk about “deflation”. Now most of my like I have heard of the dangers of inflation. From the report, deflation is worse. As the economy weakens, prices drop to create desire for products. Lower prices create weaker business, many of whom will go out of business in the process. As other business discount heavier, competition drives all prices lower. As prices go lower the market value for assets drop as well. This lower the economic power of all consumers, who pull more money out of the economy, driving the economy down, creating a spiral that ends far worse off than before.

There must be something to this as FDR spent the country out of the Great Depression and President Elect Obama has already announced bold building projects to start as soon as he is in office. Can we save ourselves into oblivion?

* New F-150, up to 21 mpg: Unsurpassed fuel economy in the full-size pickup segment delivering up to 21 miles per gallon highway with F-150 SFE “superior fuel economy” edition.

Note: 2009 F-150 not included in the “Employee Pricing Plus” program – but is eligible for the special 0 percent financing offer tied to the company’s most fuel-efficient models.

“Ford is bullish on fuel economy,” said Ken Czubay, Ford’s vice president of Sales and Marketing. “Each new and significantly freshened vehicle we’ve brought to market in the past year has the best or among the best fuel economy in its segment, and we want to provide customers an extra reason to drive one of these high-quality, fuel-efficient cars, crossovers and trucks.”

The Plan
Beginning Wednesday and running through Jan. 5, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury are making their highly prized employee discount pricing even more attractive through the “Employee Pricing Plus” program.

The special incentive not only offers customers employee pricing on most 2008 and 2009 Ford, Lincoln Mercury models but will additionally offer up to $6,000 cash back. Alternatively, if customers select one of Ford’s most fuel-efficient vehicles, they will have the option for 0 percent financing for 36 months.

Excluded from the Employee Pricing Plus plan are 09MY F-150, 08/09MY Escape/Mariner Hybrids, 08/09MY Shelby GT500, F-Series chassis cabs models and E-Series cutaways models.

“Now is the best time to buy one of our Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicles,” says Czubay. “The Ford Employee Pricing Plus program offers customers an unparalleled value on Ford’s fuel-efficient, technology-leading, high-quality lineup.”

Cars for the U.S., not just Europe

December 13, 2008

I hear all the talk about the car makers can not build good cars. All 3 of the “Big 3″ have successful European and Asian models. This article talks about Ford and GM’s cars. Chrsler/Jeep/Dodge have great models as well. The Jeep Wrangler has ben available in a very economicle diesel version for years. Dodge Caliber was released from day 1 in a 50 MPG version. You just can not buy it here in America. Ford’s new Fiesta is being released in a 65 MPG version, again only in Europe. So if the mar makes do make them, why can;t we buy them. Read the article below.

Fast-Tracking Some Good Cars

With a bailout of automakers moving from likelihood to inevitability, Congress and President-elect Barack Obama are talking tough on the conditions to be attached to the money, no doubt trying to avoid the angry reaction that nearly scuttled the finance industry assistance package.

Congressional critics, like Senator Richard C. Shelby of Alabama, senior Republican on the banking committee, say that any Detroit bailout would be ineffective unless the automakers can quickly cut costs and produce more compelling, fuel-efficient cars.

What the politicians have not highlighted is that a relatively simple change of regulations – perhaps just a temporary exemption – at the same time Congress opens the purse strings could quickly alter the competitive landscape for the Detroit Three.

General Motors and Ford already make popular, high-quality, high-mileage automobiles. The trouble is, because of regulatory differences between the United States and the European Union, they’re sold only in Europe.

The automakers’ reluctance to sell those cars in the United States is not as simple as the cars’ inability to meet United States standards for equipment, safety and exhaust emissions; there’s also the cost involved in the certification process. Changing the law to allow the United States sale of cars compliant with European emissions and crash standards, even for just a few years, would allow G.M. and Ford to quickly add some of their popular, high-mileage European models to their lineups here in America.
Ford S-MaxFord S-Max, the 2007 European Car of the Year. (Uli Deck/European Pressphoto Agency)

It’s reasonable to think that within a year, G.M. could import the tiny Opel Agila, the sporty Chevy Spark, and the midsize Opel Insignia, which won the 2009 European Car of the Year award. Ford’s improved lineup could include the Ka subcompact, the universally praised Fiesta and the S-Max minivan, which blows the sliding doors off any current domestic competition.

Crash testing for new cars, often referred to as New Car Assessment Programs, varies by geographic region, though a 10-year plan is in place to define a global standard. The N.C.A.P. test results, summarized in the United States in easy-to-grasp star ratings (five is best, one is worst), provides useful information for consumers, though it is not the same as the federal tests conducted by automakers to certify new models before they can go on sale.

Currently, the United States and Japan each have their own standards, while Europe and Australia both use the European N.C.A.P. standard. The United States standard, administered by the N.H.T.S.A., involves the assessment the forces on a crash dummy after a full-width frontal crash into a concrete barrier at 35 miles an hour. A similar test for side impacts sends a 3,015-pound trolley at a 63-degree angle into the side of a stationary car at 38.5 miles per hour.

In Europe, the N.C.A.P. standards vary slightly — the full-frontal impact speed is 40 m.p.h. rather than 35, and the side impact trolley weighs only 2,090 pounds and hits the car at 90 degrees rather than 63 degrees.
Opel InsigniaOpel Insignia, the 2009 European Car of the Year.

Additionally, the European N.C.A.P. standard adds an offset frontal impact into a deformable barrier to the testing regimen. This test is intended to simulate a head-on collision, and while the test typically imparts less energy to the safety dummies, it poses extreme stresses to the safety structure of the car and is especially helpful in determining the risk of intrusion injuries.

Critics consider the lack of an offset crash in the N.H.T.S.A. program to be an oversight, and advocate the wholesale adoption of European N.C.A.P. testing procedures. But given the usual similarity of results between the tests, the reasonable conclusion seems that either testing regimen can ensure safe automobiles.

Perhaps the biggest difference in the safety standards is that the United States standard requires a safety measure, typically an airbag, for an unbelted passenger in a frontal accident. In Europe, no such requirement exists. The N.H.T.S.A. says that the United States standard is required because seatbelt compliance in the United States is low, but critics contend airbags that comply with N.C.A.P. standards are too powerful and actually reduce safety for belted occupants.

Emissions standards would likely cause more consternation. The differences between European emissions standards and the standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency are difficult to measure because the test cycles used to measure nitrogen-oxides and particulate-matter emissions differ. But European and American standards for gasoline-powered cars have been nearly identical since 2007.

European standards allow slightly higher particulate emissions for diesel cars, but nearly all cars sold in Europe could still pass both standards and even the stringent standards set by the California Air Resources Board.

Other compliance issues would need to be addressed in order to bring European-market G.M. and Ford models into the United States – English-unit speedometers and odometers would have to be fitted, as would United States-specification headlights and side markers. And United States acceptance of these standards might have to include some type of liability protection to prevent manufacturers from being sued for safety differences specific to these standards.

But allowing the sale of cars compliant with European standards, at least for a few years, would reduce the enormous costs of emissions testing and crash testing new models for the United States market. Such a move might even satisfy critics who charge that the domestic manufacturers have brought the crisis upon themselves by failing to build the right types of vehicles.

As an added benefit, American consumers could get a few great new cars.

Electric Car Makes a Comeback

December 13, 2008

In the 1990’s Ford Motor Co. got into electric vehicles in a pretty big way. Some say they were just ahead of their time. Some say it was the consumer that was not ready and some say the technology was not ready for prime time. Some say… Well no matter. One of the casualties of this time was the electric car company “Think”. Ford bought these guy, developed a great electric version of the Ranger that still remains on the road today. There is a local community here in Portland Oregon area that is reconditioning these and selling them still. For a vehicle some deemed a failure, there is still a demand for it. “Think” is making a come- back in our current market. Atleast in Europe. Keep watch, maybe you will see them this side of the pond again someday.

Read article below:

Think Again: an Electric Car Makes a Comeback

Think City Norwegian-built Think City will be available in Norway and Denmark later this month.

Americans with long memories of electric vehicles will recall the brief flowering of the Think City, a plastic-bodied Norwegian-built battery car.

Ford bought Think’s parent company, then known as Pivco Industries, for $23 million in 1999. In a burst of optimism, Ford thought it could sell 3,500 to 5,000 vehicles a year, but the actual numbers were much lower and Ford sold out in 2003.

The climate for electric vehicles is presumably better now, though price, range, performance and the economic downturn are still daunting obstacles to significant sales numbers.

Looking to buck the odds, Think is back with a revamped City, though only in Europe.

Richard Canny, the chief executive for Think, said the new City is “night and day” different from the earlier model, though both are made of recyclable plastic body panels with molded-in colors. The City is built on a new platform with a larger body, and it is fully capable of highway speeds.

The car, which has been crash tested in Europe, is basically a two-seater, though 2+2 children’s seats are available. It can reach 68 miles an hour and has a cruising range of 100 to 110 miles, roughly double the earlier vehicle. It takes 12 hours to fully recharge the battery from a 110-volt wall outlet. It will sell for about $30,000 in Europe (the company Web site says “around $31,388″).

The key for greater range is lithium-ion batteries, which come from two American suppliers, A123 and EnerDel (a division of Ener1). The car is also being sold with Zebra sodium-nickel-chloride batteries.

Charles Gassenheimer, chief executive of Ener1, said the EnerDel division, which has a $70 million contract with Think, has begun shipping battery packs to Norway.

“Our big challenge is to commercialize electric vehicles, and the technology is improving quickly,” he said. “The batteries are lasting longer, and range is getting better – 100 miles, that’s a lot of range.”

Of course, what looks good to a battery supplier may not impress consumers. Limited range for battery cars is still an issue. The only plug-in electric car sold in the United States with lithium-ion batteries is the Tesla Roadster.

Part of the problem is cost. Mr. Gassenheimer said the 26-kilowatt-hour Think battery pack is about half the price of the car.

The first market for this little car is Norway, which, Mr. Canny said, is particularly friendly to electric vehicles.

“There is no tax on the initial sale of electric cars, no annual road tax, no freeway tolls, free parking on public streets and they can use bus and taxi lanes,” he said. “Usage incentives like that make it compelling.”

Mr. Canny cited other subsidies for electric cars in Denmark, where the Think will be offered later this year, France and Spain.

“We’re interested in starting in the markets that are most attractive to E.V.’s, and for now that means Western Europe and Scandinavia,” he said. “But the U.S. is moving quickly to offer incentives, too.”

Think North America was formed last year by the Norwegian parent company and two United States-based investment firms, Rockport Capital, and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. General Electric has also invested $4 million. The North American company has a temporary base in Menlo Park, Calif.

But according to Mr. Canny, a decision on a United States entry date won’t be made until the first quarter of next year. “We do not have the capacity to meet U.S. market requirements,” he said. “Our Norwegian factory near Oslo can make only 10,000 cars per year.”

Think wants to set up a United States assembly plant, a process Mr. Canny said would take slightly more than a year.

Great news for all mfg. Chrysler has electric vehicles coming. Ford has had a hybrid for years in the Escape with the Fusion coming on-line soon. This is bail-out money that makes sense.

Tax Breaks Coming For Electric Cars

An overlooked part of the $700 billion bailout provides an incentive for consumers looking to purchase green cars.

WASHINGTON DC October 31, 2008; The AP reported that Plug-in electric vehicles from General Motors and Toyota are not expected to hit showrooms for more than a year, but when they arrive, the first buyers will be eligible for a tax credit that could reach $7,500.

The incentives, which received scant attention as part of the $700 billion bailout of the financial industry, are aimed at making the green vehicles more affordable. Plug-ins are expected to be more expensive than conventional hybrids, and the tax breaks will give dealers a better sales pitch when carmakers begin production during the next five years.

Toyota Motor Corp.’s plug-in hybrid is expected in showrooms in late 2009, and GM’s Chevrolet Volt, an extended range plug-in electric car, is due in late 2010. General Motors Corp. is also introducing a plug-in version of the Saturn Vue in 2010, and Nissan Motor Co. plans to bring an electric vehicle to the U.S. by 2010.

“There’s a series of vehicles coming to market in the next couple of years and I think the credits are going to do a lot to diminish that first hurdle,” said Genevieve Cullen, vice president of the Electric Drive Transportation Association.

Under the new law, plug-in electric cars with at least a 4-kilowatt-hour battery pack will be eligible for a $2,500 credit, with an additional $417 for each additional kilowatt-hour of battery capacity, up to $7,500. GM expects the Volt will merit the maximum credit.

The vehicle credits were among several tax breaks included in the Senate version of the bailout bill to attract broad support in Congress. The credits will be available on plug-in electric vehicles sold after Dec. 31, so consumers will be able to take advantage when plug-ins from Toyota and GM hit showrooms.

The Tesla Roadster, an electric sports car that’s already on sale, will be eligible for the full $7,500 tax credit, company officials said. The Roadster, which starts at $109,000, can travel 244 miles on a 3.5-hour charge.

Tesla’s all-electric Model S sedan, which is expected to sell for $60,000 by mid-2011, is also expected to get the full tax credit under the current law, company officials said.

The $758 million in tax credits, which were developed by Sens. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., and Reps. Dave Camp, R-Mich., and Jay Inslee, D-Wash., are similar to a tax program available since 2006 for buyers of gas-electric hybrids.

Lawmakers based the plug-in tax breaks on the hybrid program but said the new incentives are more important in an age of expensive gasoline. The vehicles, which can be recharged by plugging into a standard wall outlet, hold the promise of running on battery power for short distances.

“New technology is always more expensive, and what we want to do is try to jump-start this new technology,” Camp said.

The hybrid incentives, which have given buyers tax breaks of up to $3,150, begin phasing out after an individual automaker sells 60,000 hybrids. Toyota reached that benchmark in late 2006 because of the success of the Prius, and Honda Motor Co. surpassed it earlier this year.

The plug-in tax credits will simply begin phasing out when the entire auto industry sells 250,000 of the vehicles, giving companies more reason to get their cars into showrooms before their rivals. The program is scheduled to end by 2015.

Tom Stricker, Toyota’s director of technical and regulatory affairs, said this approach will “incentivize the manufacturers to get into the game because we’re all working toward the same cap.”

GM has estimated that buyers of the Volt, which is designed to draw power from a 16-kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery for the first 40 miles, will qualify for the maximum credit of $7,500. The Volt, with a small gas engine to extend its range, is expected to cost $30,000 to $40,000.

GM spokesman Greg Martin said the vehicle’s “propulsion system will be expensive. Tax incentives are an effective tool that helps make the upfront price equation for the consumer more attractive and can help spur early adoption of new technology.”
