FUSION HYBRID SETS WORLD RECORD WITH 1,445 MILES ON SINGLE TANK OF GAS

Ford is leading the pack and setting the tone. Ford Fusion is winning award after award and setting one record after another. The latest recognition it recieved was during an attempt to drive 1000 miles on one tank of regular 87 octane fuel. The same stuff you and I put in our cars everyday. The result was, they failed. They got to a 1000 miles and still had about 1/3 tank left! Then the question becomes, how far can a Ford Fusion actually get on one regular tank of fuel. Questions like that demand to be answered. So they did. You will be surprised. Read below to find out.

WASHINGTON, April 28, 2009 – Drivers trained in mileage-maximizing techniques such as smooth acceleration and coasting to red lights were able to get an

extraordinary 1,445.7 miles out of a single tank of gas during a fund-raising effort in Washington, D.C. that concluded today. They did it by averaging 81.5 miles per gallon in an off-the-showroom floor, non-modified 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, the most fuel-efficient midsize car in North America – nearly doubling its U.S. certified mileage.

The Fusion Hybrid 1,000-Mile Challenge started at 8:15 a.m. EDT on Saturday, April 25, from Mount Vernon, Va., and ended this morning at 5:37 a.m. on George Washington Parkway in Washington, D.C. After more than 69 continuous hours of driving, the Fusion Hybrid finally depleted its tank and came to a stop with an odometer reading of 1,445.7 miles – setting a world record for gasoline-powered, midsize sedan.

The challenge team, which included NASCAR star Carl Edwards, high mileage trailblazer Wayne Gerdes and several Ford Motor Company engineers, raised more than $8,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) by exceeding the goal of 1,000 miles on a single tank of gas. The Fusion Hybrid’s official estimated range is approximately 700 miles per tank.

“Not only does this demonstrate the Fusion Hybrid’s fuel efficiency, it also shows that driving technique is one of the keys to maximizing its potential,” said Nancy Gioia, director, Ford Sustainable Mobility Technologies and Hybrid Vehicle Programs. “The fact that we were able raise much needed funds for JDRF while raising the bar on fuel efficient driving performance made the effort doubly worthwhile.”

Maximizing mileage
A team of seven drivers prepared for the challenge by learning a few mileage-maximizing techniques, most of which can be used in any vehicle to improve fuel economy, but are especially useful in the Fusion Hybrid where the driver can take advantage of pure electric energy at speeds below 47 mph.

CleanMPG.com founder Wayne Gerdes, an engineer from Illinois who coined the term “hypermiling” to describe the mileage-maximizing techniques, provided the pointers. They include:

• Slowing down and maintaining even throttle pressure;
• Gradually accelerating and smoothly braking;
• Maintaining a safe distance between vehicles and anticipating traffic conditions;
• Coasting up to red lights and stop signs to avoid fuel waste and brake wear;
• Minimize use of heater and air conditioning to reduce the load on the engine;
• Close windows at high speeds to reduce aerodynamic drag;
• Applying the “Pulse and Glide” technique while maintaining the flow of traffic;
• Minimize excessive engine workload by using the vehicle’s kinetic forward motion to climb hills, and use downhill momentum to build speed; and
• Avoiding bumps and potholes that can reduce momentum

“You become very aware of your driving because you’re constantly looking for opportunities to maximize mileage, and a more aware driver is a safer driver, too,” said Gil Portalatin, Ford hybrid applications manager.

In addition, it is important for Fusion Hybrid drivers to manage the battery system’s state of charge through the use of regenerative braking and coasting, and balancing the use of the electric motor and gas engine in city driving to avoid wasting fuel.

Fusion Hybrid drivers also can stay more connected to the hybrid driving experience with Ford’s SmartGaugeTM with EcoGuide, a unique instrument cluster that helps coach drivers on how to optimize performance of their hybrid.

The Challenge
The Fusion Hybrid 1,000-Mile Challenge team took turns driving several routes in and around the national capital over the course of approximately three days and nights. The route involved elevation changes, and ranged from the relatively open George Washington Parkway to a 3-mile stretch in the heart of the city that is clogged with roughly 30 traffic signals.

“The Fusion Hybrid works brilliantly,” Gerdes said. “When you don’t need acceleration power while driving around town, the gas engine shuts down seamlessly. There’s not another hybrid drivetrain in the world that does that as effectively. The Fusion engineering team really knocked it out of the park.”

Ford NASCAR star Carl Edwards took time away from the high speed world of professional car racing to contribute to the Fusion Hybrid team’s success in D.C.

“It was exciting to be an active part in this challenge. The fact that it will help spread the word about the Fusion Hybrid’s great mileage, and help out a great charity, makes it even more special,” said Edwards, whose ‘99′ team has used fuel-saving techniques to win races. “There’s no question that the Fusion Hybrid will help consumers save fuel when they drive it. Having driven the car, I feel strongly about how great it is – so strong that I’ve purchased one myself.”

Can a 2010 Ford Fusion Go 1000 Miles on One Tank of Gas?

Have you ever heard of a “hypermiler”? It is a person who specializes at getting a lot of miles per gallon out of a vehcile. In other words, a fuel efficiency expert. DEARBORN, Mich., April 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — This weekend, the 2010 Ford (NYSE: F) Fusion Hybrid is being put to the ultimate fuel-efficiency test. A team of drivers, including NASCAR star Carl Edwards and world-record breaking hypermiler Wayne Gerdes, will attempt to drive more than 1,000 miles on a single tank of gas, raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in the process.

The 1,000-Mile Challenge starts at around 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, from Mount Vernon, Va., and ends the morning of Monday, April 27, in Washington, D.C. The team will drive for more than 43 hours continuously to reach the 1,000-mile goal. The drivers will do stints of between two and three hours each and will have regular breaks to ensure safe driving is maintained. Already rated as the most fuel-efficient, mid-sized sedan in America, the Fusion Hybrid will need to average at least 57 mpg to achieve its goal. During preliminary testing in preparation for this challenge, Ford engineers have reached as much as 70 mpg in the Fusion Hybrid by using Eco-Driving techniques.

The team will run clinics for media and customers over the weekend in the Fusion Hybrid, conducting interviews and vehicle demonstrations on how simple techniques can make a significant difference to real world fuel economy numbers.

The Fusion Hybrid being used in the challenge will be a factory produced model with no modifications or alterations and will run on regular 87 octane gas.

Is Chrysler’s Sebring an Accord beater?

In the past few years, Chrysler has designed and produced some great-looking vehicles. Recently, I got to drive the 2009 Sebring Touring Sedan. The Sebring sedan was redesigned two years ago. The convertible got the same treatment in 2008. Both are beautiful cars and deserve a second look by those wanting to buy a stylish, reliable family sedan.

This year, the Chrysler Sebring gets standard four-wheel antilock disc brakes, and stability control is now standard on all but the base LX model.

The Touring and Limited trims get additional standard equipment like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated mirrors and tinted windows. The Sebring Touring was a dream to drive, with a 2.7-liter V6 engine that offered up 173 horsepower. Acceleration was quick, though a bit noisy.

The midsize sedan segment probably is the most competitive in the industry, and the V6 in the Sebring Touring is a great buy at its price. It’s more powerful than a comparably priced Chevy Malibu and Dodge Caliber. The popular Honda Accord beats it by just 4 hp. Handling was pretty sharp, and braking was quick and precise. Ride quality was excellent, and seats were well-bolstered and cushioned.

Interior design was sleek and had lots of silver and black. Overall, the Sebring was a fun sedan to drive and seemed to have a few sports-car characteristics that made you forget you were driving a family sedan.

Fuel economy wasn’t too shabby for a performance engine like that featured in the Touring model. I averaged about 24 miles per gallon during the week I drove it. It’s been rated to get 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

After driving the Sebring, I was surprised by its comparatively low price tag: $21,810 for a base Sebring Touring. The test model I had included options that pushed the price to $25,815. With the smooth ride, powerful engine and attractive interior, it feels more like a $35,000 car than a $25,000 one.

I don’t know if the Sebring is going to bring Chrysler into the midsize sedan race with Toyota and Honda, but I would rate the Sebring a good buy compared to the more expensive best-sellers.

US Consumer React Positivley to Current Events

I know it is difficult with the majority of the focus on the business of bankruptcy and business failing, but somehow the American public has found the strength and courage to see positive in the future.  Not all consumers are excited, noticeably the primarily individuals who are GM bond holders with $27B invested who are proposed to only get 10% of the GM pie while the United Auto Workers Union (UAW) with $20B invested is getting 39%.  Political move or fiscal prowess?   Over-all, the consumers seem to like it to the tune of effecting the largest jump in consumer confidence in years.  Sounds like a great time to buy a new car.

U.S. consumer confidence sees biggest jump in 6 years

NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. consumer confidence soared in May to its highest level in eight months as severe strains in the labor market showed some signs of easing, though Americans’ moods remained depressed by historical standards.

The Conference Board, an industry group, said on Tuesday its index of consumer attitudes jumped to 54.9 in May from a revised 40.8 in April, the biggest one-month jump since April 2003. Economists had been looking for a much smaller rise to 42.0.

Fewer Americans said jobs were “hard to get,” the survey found, with that measure slipping to 44.7 percent from 46.6 percent. Those saying jobs were plentiful climbed to a still meager 5.7 percent, but that was still higher than April’s 4.9 percent.

“Consumers are considerably less pessimistic than they were earlier this year,” said Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board’s Consumer Research Center.

The data was in line with other evidence suggesting that, while the economy continues to contract in the current quarter, the pace of deterioration has abated somewhat.

U.S. stocks extended their rally after the data, with the Dow Jones industrial average up 120 points or 1.5 percent.

The survey offered mixed messages regarding Americans’ propensity to spend money. The proportion of those who said they planned on buying a car over the next six months rose to 5.5 percent, its highest in at least a year.

But fewer intended to buy homes — only 2.3 percent, a tough break for one of the hardest hit sectors in the country’s economic crisis. A separate report on Tuesday revealed U.S. home prices dropped 18.7 percent in March compared to a year earlier.
