Scott and Shannon Inukai have recently been promoted and are now Vice Presidents of Dick’s Auto Group. Dick Inukai, Founder and President has invested years into building this corporation. It is exciting to see a leadership team following him that will guarantee the success of this fine family owned corporation far into the future and the continued availability of quality domestic vehicles and services to the local community.

Chrysler News

The last few weeks have been a bit of a roller coaster for everyone in the auto industry, connected to the auto industry or even observing the auto industry. There have been heartaches and frustration along with anticipation and hope. But what we come out with at the end, are just some facts and statements that we all have to process and adapt to.

It is a new era going forward. Dick Inukai has been through “new eras” before. Actually he was born in the middle of one of those eras. A little event called World War II. He also had a Dodge dealership during the 70’s and another little event called the oil embargo and gas rationing. Here is a quick update of the last few days concerning Chrysler and their re-organization process.

The Supreme Court has declined to extend a stay of the sale of Chrysler assets to Fiat, clearing the way for the deal to close.

A federal bankruptcy judge approved the automaker’s plan to terminate 789 dealer franchises.

Sergio Marchionne, the Fiat CEO who heads the reborn Chrysler Group, appointed a new management team that includes Jim Press as deputy CEO.

US Consumer React Positivley to Current Events

I know it is difficult with the majority of the focus on the business of bankruptcy and business failing, but somehow the American public has found the strength and courage to see positive in the future.  Not all consumers are excited, noticeably the primarily individuals who are GM bond holders with $27B invested who are proposed to only get 10% of the GM pie while the United Auto Workers Union (UAW) with $20B invested is getting 39%.  Political move or fiscal prowess?   Over-all, the consumers seem to like it to the tune of effecting the largest jump in consumer confidence in years.  Sounds like a great time to buy a new car.

U.S. consumer confidence sees biggest jump in 6 years

NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. consumer confidence soared in May to its highest level in eight months as severe strains in the labor market showed some signs of easing, though Americans’ moods remained depressed by historical standards.

The Conference Board, an industry group, said on Tuesday its index of consumer attitudes jumped to 54.9 in May from a revised 40.8 in April, the biggest one-month jump since April 2003. Economists had been looking for a much smaller rise to 42.0.

Fewer Americans said jobs were “hard to get,” the survey found, with that measure slipping to 44.7 percent from 46.6 percent. Those saying jobs were plentiful climbed to a still meager 5.7 percent, but that was still higher than April’s 4.9 percent.

“Consumers are considerably less pessimistic than they were earlier this year,” said Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board’s Consumer Research Center.

The data was in line with other evidence suggesting that, while the economy continues to contract in the current quarter, the pace of deterioration has abated somewhat.

U.S. stocks extended their rally after the data, with the Dow Jones industrial average up 120 points or 1.5 percent.

The survey offered mixed messages regarding Americans’ propensity to spend money. The proportion of those who said they planned on buying a car over the next six months rose to 5.5 percent, its highest in at least a year.

But fewer intended to buy homes — only 2.3 percent, a tough break for one of the hardest hit sectors in the country’s economic crisis. A separate report on Tuesday revealed U.S. home prices dropped 18.7 percent in March compared to a year earlier.

Wells Otis Development along with LRS Architects and TM Rippey engineers completed the design for the new Dick’s Country Chrysler Jeep Dodge in Hillsboro, OR. The new facility was constructed by Perlo McCormack Pacific. The construction was completed in Dec 2008.

The new campus accommodates unifying all functions of sales, service and parts under one roof, making the dealership experience a seamless and consistent one for all our clients no matter what your needs are. Wireless internet is available in the lounge and showroom areas along with an adjacent kid safe play room for our younger customers and their families.

The shop area has task area heaters, special ventilation, high efficiency lighting as well as fluid delivery systems that make this operation state of the art and efficient while it protects employee, your vehicle and our environment. The equipment for the new water efficient and conservation minded automated car wash and water recovery system has also arrived and will be a welcome addition to the service experience when complete.

The new facility makes use of state of the art reflective glass panels to save energy and provide natural light. It also has a high efficiency high voltage electric service and modern water treatment, filtration and conservation processes. Our new design dramatically increases green space and bring a new and fresh face to our local Hillsboro landscape.

When is the Best Time to Call a CAB?

Occasionally, here at the Blogs, you’ll see a reference to the “CAB”. The Chrysler, Customer Advisory Board, or CAB for short, is a group of about 1500 current, past and non-Chrysler customers. These CAB members have volunteered their time and enthusiasm for improved Chrysler products, to help Chrysler Engineers, Managers, Designers and Executives to build better quality products and vehicles.

The question I hear most frequently about the CAB is, “What is it and how does it work?” The CAB works like this: Engineers and/or Managers will have a concept or question about a particular item, be it headlights, door handle location or the quality of interior materials. They will post a Poll or Question on the secure CAB website, asking the members a few questions and then allowing open discussion between the members

I think it is fair to say that these discussions can often go places that Chrysler did not anticipate, and sometimes result in comments and ideas that were not originally on the table, but turn out to be excellent.

The comments are then evaluated by Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep Engineers and some make their way to market. The two fastest changes in the short time that the CAB and Chrysler LLC has existed was the new Lifetime Warranty and the numerous interior quality changes made, some even in mid-model year, including the interior upgrade to the Jeep Patriot.

The most interesting discussions, albeit the most chaotic, are the live chats that we have with various Department Vice Presidents and Managers, up to and including Vice Chairman and President Jim Press. He proved that Chrysler does listen by giving out his email address to the group. The CAB was the first to learn of the ENVI electric vehicles, one of the best kept secrets in the automotive industry.

While GM has been touting their ‘Volt’ for several years, under the radar, Chrysler has developed not one, but three electric vehicles! They may just be ready for market before the Volt, and they certainly appear to be more practical, ranging from Minivan to Jeep Wrangler.

Sometimes you are so close to a product that it takes outside eyes, looking from a fresh perspective, to spot and identify problems, That is what the CAB brings to the table, we tell Chrysler what is wrong and what is right with a product design or intended use from a different viewpoint.

Chrysler tells us what they think and we tell them what we think. Hopefully it’s a quicker means to a better vehicle, that reaches a larger market segment. We are brutally honest with our comments, be it about certain vehicles (WHO thought THAT design was a good idea?), the choice of transmissions and suspensions (What is THAT suspension doing on a Jeep?), or simply trying to make a defroster or headlight work better.

We’ve been tough on the dealer network, vehicle service and past management and focus groups, who allowed ill-conceived vehicles and option-package bundles to harm sales by limiting choices. Chrysler has learned about our passion for the brands we care about and we have tried to give them a pass when it comes to past management. After all, this is a relatively new team in possibly the toughest business environment in 60 years.

The CAB has learned just how fast and/or slow a major corporation moves and Chrysler has learned that a lineup lacking replacements for the Neon, Jeep Cherokee XJ, or a face lift for the PT, brings the ire of the brand faithful. We can’t live in the past as we move forward, but we must understand why those great vehicles of the past worked and sold so well. As we reach out to new customers we must not ignore the customers that the great Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep legacy is built upon.

That is what the CAB is and does. It’s a tribute to the new management that we have been brought into the process. It’s a tribute to generations of past customers that we are listened to. It’s a positive feeling that ‘Chrysler IS Listening’ to us, however it is sometimes frustrating that we are not allowed into some product development loops earlier, before limited funds are wasted upon dubious vehicles or designs. Overall it is the best of any industry attempt to gain direct customer input in order to build a better and more appealing product, because ‘Chrysler Listens’!
