After extensive testing and voting by Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) members in October, the 2009 Dodge Ram took first place on Canada’s pickup podium. This left its sole competitor, the ‘also-new-for-2009′ Ford F150 to take a back-seat at second place.

Faced with die-hard brand devotion and tough competition from offshore products and proven homegrown steel, Dodge decided to step up the Ram for its latest revision in a big way. They’ve spared no expense to do it- and their efforts are very proudly displayed in the Ram’s new sheet-metal.

Slick looks
Two-tone paint, alloy wheels, fog-lamps, fender flares and bountiful chrome jazzed up the “Laramie” tester, which wore a body visually leaps out, even when parked. Factory dual-outlet exhaust looks great, as does the integrated tailgate spoiler and near life-sized Ram-head logo.

Ram’s great new face clears the highway fast lane like a muscle-sedan- though given gas prices lately, this isn’t a major concern for most buyers.

Yep, it’s got a HEMI
The automaker’s range-topping 5.7 liter HEMI V8 powered the tester. It’s been re-tuned and revised this year to develop 390 horsepower while using about 4 percent less fuel than the previous engine.

The HEMI is happy to loaf around under 2000 RPM, with highway mileage averaging about 15L/100km at real-life speeds during winter driving. That’s not exactly thrifty- but within limits for a machine with such intentions.

Just be sure you need the power offered by this engine, as smaller options are available that should turn in less than the 18L / 100km consumption figure I averaged over some 2000 kilometers.

Chrysler Financial is also offering zero percent financing to qualified customers for up to 48 months. Other finance terms and rates are also available. “Chrysler is offering America the same pricing our employees receive through the new ‘Employee Pricing Plus Plus’ program with great savings off the Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price, plus cash discounts of up to $3,500 on 2009 models, plus zero percent financing through Chrysler Financial,” said Steven Landry, Executive Vice President – North American Sales, Marketing, Mopar Parts and Service. “With affordable financing available and some of the best pricing we have offered in recent months, this really is a great time to visit a Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge dealer.” The only model not included in the program is the Dodge Sprinter. That would mean the new Dodge Challenger and the Dodge Viper are included.

Canada Helps Out Auto Industry With $4 billion

Reuters Reports that Canada will follow the United States in emergency loans to the Canadian branches of of the Chrysler and GM, Ford has not asked…

The day after President Bush announced a $17.4 Billion package, Canada announced theirs as well.There will be measures to benefit automotive suppliers and a another to help consumers with easier credit to buy cars.

“There are literally across the country hundreds of thousands if not millions of potentially affected families by the distress of this industry,” Harper said at a joint news conference.

“And we are obviously making sure at this Christmas time that, within the confines of our responsibility for taxpayer money, that we are also going to look after their interest.”

A collapse of the Detroit Three automakers would put nearly 600,000 Canadians out of work within five years, most of them in Ontario, according to a recent report by provincial advisory panel.

Harper said the governments were attempting to attach some liens and secure some assets of the car companies “but I will not fool you — there is obviously some money at risk here.”

He said the aid reflected Canada’s 20 percent share of North American production capacity. But at $3.3 billion, the Canadian package actually represents one-sixth, or 16 percent, of the $20.7 billion in North American aid announced over the past two days.

As the Big Three go, So Go the Rest

A recent study commissioned by the Ontario Manufacturing Council of Canada, warned that a collapse of the Detroit Three would ripple through the entire economy, hitting creditors, suppliers, parts manufacturers and dealerships.

McGuinty, the Ontario Canda premier, said Asian automakers, which have facilities in Canada, backed the bailout aid package forthe US Auto Industry that Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced recently for both GM aned Chrysler. Ford Motor Co has not asked and is not recieving assistance at this time. He said that if the one of the Big Three companies fail, the entire industry, including the Asian-based companies, would suffer because of the integration of the North American industry.

Harper is a Conservative who generally opposes state intervention in the economy but he said on Thursday that the government would end a 12-year string of budget surpluses and inject C$20 billion to C$30 billion of stimulus into the economy next fiscal year.
