Even if an interested buyer has the estimated $400,000 to buy the next-gen Ford GT, it’s looking increasingly difficult to actually own one of the new, carbon-fiber supercars. Not only is there an application process to get through successfully, but, according to an anonymous source to Autoweek, there might only be 100 of them that are earmarked for the US in its first year. An additional 100 examples would also go to international markets in that time, including fewer than 20 for the UK, this source claims.
When asked for confirmation of this by Autoblog, Ford spokesperson Matt Leaver responded, “We have stated we are building 250 Ford GTs per year. We will give more information on distribution/allocation at a later date.” With such low numbers, even once assembly of the model really gets rolling by racing specialists Multimatic in Canada, it’s still never going to be a common sight on the roads – even by supercar standards.
With deliveries still about a year away, the exact specs of the new supercar remain a mystery. Ford remains adamant that the GT has more than 600 horsepower from its 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 but just how much is anyone’s guess. Forza Motorsport 6 shows the figures at 630 hp and 539 pound-feet of torque at a weight of 2,890 pounds. However, the Blue Oval isn’t commenting about whether those are final numbers or just placeholders for the video game. Spy shots suggestthat development is ongoing, though.
