If you think the Ford Focus ST doesn’t have quite enough punch, but the has RS a little too much, you might be in luck. Ford appears to be preparing something in between. This Ford Focus ST was spied testing on the roads around the Nürburgring with some apparent upgrades.
Never mind the dual red racing stripes running up the hood and along the roof – what we’re interested in are the aerodynamic upgrades that the Blue Oval automaker was kind enough to highlight in bright yellow against the white bodywork – and the promise of what’s behind them.
With the Focus ST kicking out a little over 250 horsepower and the Focus RS a solid 350, there’s plenty of gap to bridge here, and the prototype you see here could be packing somewhere in the neighborhood of 280 – closer to the current ST’s output than that of the RS since it likely won’t incorporate the latter’s trick all-wheel drive system.
Ford set down the precedent with the smaller Fiesta ST200 introduced in Geneva. And a more potent Focus could be just what Dearborn needs to fend off the advances of other powerful front-drivers in Europe especially in the forms of the Renault Mégane RS 275 Trophy, Seat Leon Cupra 290, VW Golf GTI Clubsport, and Honda Civic Type R. Here’s hoping that this one might be offered back home in America, too.
