Jay Leno SHO-guns the Ford Festiva to its full potential

Take a Ford Festiva and drop a 3.0-liter V6 from a Taurus SHO where the backseat usually sits, and the Shogun is the wonderful result. Jay Leno owns one of the just seven examples from the early ’90s, and this boiling hot hatch gets a thorough look this week in the comedian’s garage.

The Shogun’s cartoonishly massive rear fenders show the little car means business, and it backs up the mean look with impressive performance for the era. The mid-mounted V6 makes 220 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. In a vehicle that weighs just 2,190 pounds, the power gets the hot hatch to 60 miles per hour in 5 seconds, which is quick for the early ’90s. Jay ups the ante even more with nitrous injection that pushes the output to 300 horsepower or more when he needs the extra grunt.

This thing looks like an absolute blast to drive. The engine sounds fantastic, and the Shogun rockets away as soon as Jay gets on the throttle. As one of just seven made, you’re not likely to get this good of a luck at the Shogun again for a while, so take a ride with Leno to get the details on the hottest hatch of the era.
