The Boss 429 was built to give Chrysler’s Hemi a run for its money. Intent on homologating the engine for NASCAR, Ford contracted Kar Kraft to build 1,358 examples. The Cobra Jet drag racer was used as the starting point, but extensive modifications were required to fit that giant 7.0-liter V8 under the hood. The battery was moved to the trunk, the A/C yanked, and the suspension towers moved further outboard – to the detriment of handling, but the benefit of straight-line performance. Ford (under)rated the engine at 375 horsepower, but it was said to actually be good for 500 or even 600 horses.
Little wonder, then, that the Boss 429 remains highly sought-after among collectors, some of which have proven willing to spend well into six figures at auction to put one in their garage. Given those prices, extensive restoration is almost a given, and Marcus Anghel of Anghel Restorations is apparently the go-to specialist for the job. So he stopped by with his latest project for a little chat in this latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage.
